As part of the “Green Spirit Prespa” project, a successful FAM trip was organized last week in the Prespa region, bringing together international tour operators and professionals.
The program focused on the development and promotion of tourism products with strong international potential, with particular emphasis on birdwatching, astronomy and gastronomy. These segments represent an important opportunity to position Prespa not only as a nature destination, but as a region offering authentic, carefully curated and experience-based tourism products.
Throughout the multi-day program, participants explored the natural treasures of the Prespa region, including Lake Prespa, Galichica National Park, Ezerani Nature Park, Golem Grad Island and the surrounding landscapes. Special attention was given to birdwatching activities, during which approximately 99 bird species were recorded, clearly demonstrating the region’s strong potential to develop into a recognized birdwatching destination.
The experience confirmed that beautiful nature alone is not enough for the successful development of specialized tourism products. High-quality interpretation, professional local guides, well-designed itineraries, early planning and understanding the expectations of niche travelers are all essential elements in creating competitive tourism experiences.
In addition to birdwatching, the program also included astronomy activities, presenting Prespa as a destination with excellent conditions for stargazing and night-sky observation. Participants had the opportunity to learn about constellation recognition, telescope observation, astrophotography and the possibilities for developing astronomy-focused tourism experiences in the region.
Gastronomy was another important component of the FAM trip. Through traditional cuisine, local products, homemade food and experiences with local hosts, participants discovered Prespa as a destination where gastronomy represents not only food, but also culture, identity and storytelling deeply connected to the local community.
A particularly valuable aspect of the FAM trip was the direct exchange of knowledge and expertise with experienced tourism professionals. Their insights, recommendations and practical experience represent an important contribution to the further development and international positioning of Prespa as a niche tourism destination.
The FAM trip is part of the broader activities of the “Green Spirit Prespa” project, which aims to support the development of competitive, authentic and sustainable tourism products in the region through the inclusion of local communities, natural heritage and cultural values.
The “Green Spirit Prespa” project is co-financed by the European Union and implemented by Go Green Skopje, in partnership with Spirit of Prespa, Rural Women of Prespa and the National Association for Incoming Tourism of Macedonia.
